Call for applications – African Innovation Foundation: Innovation Prize for Africa 2018 “Investing in inclusive innovation ecosystems”


A call to Pan application invites the submission of applications from 10 October 2017 to 10 January 2018, for the seventh edition of the Innovation Prize for Africa (PIA)

·          A grand prize of US $ 185,000 to be shared among the top ten African innovators with remarkable innovations that address the African challenges, have a social impact, market potential and are able to be developed on a larger scale

·          Following the record number of African women enrolled in the previous edition, female candidates are particularly encouraged.

Accra, Ghana | Tuesday, October 10, 2017: The African Innovation Foundation (AIF) today announced the seventh edition of the Innovation Prize for Africa under the theme “Investing in inclusive innovation ecosystems.” Innovators are invited today to submit their applications . This annual award celebrates local innovation on the continent by rewarding outstanding innovations that offer practical solutions, sustainable and marketable to African problems.

Reaffirming the mission of the IAF to catalyze innovative spirit in Africa, Pauline Mujawamariya Koelbl, Director of PIA, said: “We are delighted to launch the 2018 PIA and are confident that this year will be even bigger and better in terms of participation and quality of applications. The PIA is becoming increasingly important in each edition, attracting innovators from all disciplines with exceptional solutions to African challenges. For this seventh edition, we also hope to expand our network of partners, innovators and other innovation stakeholders to build together a more solid and sustainable innovation ecosystem that will propel the continent forward. ”

Deadline and eligibility PIA

Nominations for the 2018 PIA will be accepted from 10 October 2017 to 10 January 2018, 23:59 GMT. The aim of the IAP is to strengthen innovation ecosystems in Africa by supporting a culture of innovation and competitiveness while stimulating the growth of African solutions, innovative and market-oriented, to African challenges. Specifically, the PIA honore and encourages pioneering achievements that contribute to the development of new products, increased efficiency or cost reduction in Africa. All Africans including those in the diaspora are eligible. This edition of the PIA encourages greater participation of women innovators who play an increasingly key role in the promotion of African economies through business and entrepreneurship.

Applications will be evaluated according to the PIA themes that promote the social and economic innovation in the following five categories: manufacturing and services; health and wellbeing; agriculture and agribusiness; environment, energy and water; and ICT.

The winners of the 2018 PIA will be announced at an annual ceremony in July 2018 (exact dates and venue will be announced later). The Awards ceremony is the main event of the innovation on the African calendar. It brings together innovators and Africa’s most inspiring entrepreneurs, incubators leaders, angel investors and venture capital, development of institutions, members of governments, media and many other personalities.

Create an enabling environment for local innovators

The theme this year is “Investing in inclusive innovation ecosystems” is a call to African governments and other innovation stakeholders to invest in building bridges to create more inclusive ecosystem that will accelerate and develop innovation African large scale and at all levels of society. The goal is to increase access to finance and innovative know-how and to strengthen collaboration between African countries to enable local innovators faster access to markets with high added value to their solutions.

“The PIA is a platform to show the fundamental ingenuity that exists in Africa,” said Walter Fust, Chairman of the board of the AIF. “Every year, hundreds of participants submit their applications, offering new solutions to overcome the challenges specific to Africa. This year, we want to generate more pan-African synergies in our partner network, create inclusive opportunities for local innovators and together revolutionize business models, empower people and generate positive social impact on the whole continent. ”

During the previous edition, the PIA has received more than 2,500 applications from across the continent, with a record number of women candidates (482 or 19%). This year promises to be even greater. To date, the PIA has attracted more than 7500 innovators from 52 countries, with 55 of the best innovators of the continent and over 400 innovation stakeholders, making it a truly pan-African initiative. The IAF has so far supported the former winners and runners-up of more than one million US dollars that have helped advance their innovations. And thanks to the visibility generated by the PIA, past winners have received investments of over US $ 30 million to develop and expand their operations.

In addition to the cash amount of US $ 185,000, successful candidates will benefit from many opportunities, including access to networks AIF via the platform ZuaHub on which the AIF connects innovators with the resources and support to develop.

AIF has contributed to the construction of innovation ecosystems in Africa and found opportunities increasingly greater for African innovators compared to 2011, the year the first edition of the PIA.

The selection process will be conducted by a committee of experts selected on the basis of their knowledge and experience in the five key areas of the abovementioned PIA, and their impact and contribution to technological and commercial industry on the African continent .
